iPhone Duo screen cracks: iFixit's teardown points to the hinge, but Apple hasn't explained why
- Some early iPhone Duo owners report a crunch, then a crack or bright line along the fold of the inner screen, days or even hours after buying.
- iFixit's teardown found the damage clusters in one spot near the hinge and offers theories, but says nothing is proven. Apple has not explained it.
- iFixit gives the Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repair, its best foldable score, but an inner screen costs US$999 to fix without AppleCare+.
Imagine waiting months for a US$1,999 phone, opening it a few times, and hearing a crunch. Then a thin line runs down the fold, and a bright line cuts across the screen. Since the iPhone Duo went on sale on 23 October, a number of owners have shared exactly that story online.
On 25 October, the repair company iFixit published its iPhone Duo teardown. It suggests where an iPhone Duo screen crack starts and why, but it does not claim to have found the cause. Apple had not publicly explained the problem when we checked on 26 October.
Every iPhone Duo screen crack starts in the same spot
iFixit describes owners who opened or closed the phone, heard a noise, then saw the damage. One owner’s screen failed within six hours of buying. Another’s failed before they had finished setting the phone up. Some people online now call it “crackgate”, a nickname.
iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge from teardown footage, CT scans (detailed X-ray images) and Apple’s patents. It compared that model with photos of broken screens. The damage gathers in one place: just below where the cable joining the two halves crosses the hinge, near the central support. Several hard edges meet there.
iFixit’s hinge theory is a lead, not a verdict
This part needs care. iFixit’s main idea is a theory, not a proven cause. In its simulation, the central support bar does not drop far enough as the phone closes, so the folded screen comes down onto it. That would create a small point of stress near where the cracks appear. 9to5Mac’s report on the teardown adds a second idea: curved rails that guide the hinge may rise and touch the screen.
iFixit also lists other possible causes: pressure, a trapped particle, repeated bending or a manufacturing fault. It notes that a broken connection inside the screen can show the same lines without any visible crack. The Verge reports that YouTuber CuriousHagi cracked a Duo in durability tests and found a snapped link mid-hinge.
Apple says the hinge is “engineered from more than 100 components” and is built to support the centre of the screen. The phone is rated IP68 for dust and water. In iFixit’s dust test, though, some fluorescent powder still reached the hinge’s moving parts and made it crunch. iFixit notes that IP ratings measure the sealed body, which does not seem to include the hinge.
The teardown’s good news, and the US$999 catch
iFixit gives the iPhone Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repair, the best score it has given a foldable. The batteries come out cleanly, and the outer screen survives removal. The score is provisional because parts are not yet sold through Apple’s Self Service Repair.
The inner screen is the weak point. According to Apple’s US price list, as reported by MacRumors, the iPhone Duo repair cost for the inner screen is US$999 without cover, or US$99 with AppleCare+. The replaceable matte top layer costs US$49, or US$19 with AppleCare+. Our iPhone Duo launch-day story has the full list.
If you own an iPhone Duo, or plan to buy one
- Keep the receipt and the box. Tom’s Guide points to a 14-day return window; rules differ by country, so check your local Apple page.
- Go to Apple first. iFixit says Apple is offering replacement units for now, and The National reports some owners got them. One US buyer said a carrier could not help.
- Think about AppleCare+. The gap between US$99 and US$999 is large. Prices differ by country.
- Keep the hinge clean. Avoid sandy pockets.
- Buying soon? Waiting a few weeks for Apple’s answer is reasonable, especially in the 28 countries and regions where it arrives on 30 October.
Why a calm wait makes more sense than panic
On balance, these iPhone Duo problems look real for some owners, but their size is unknown. Nobody has published how many phones are affected, and online reports tend to gather the worst cases. In our reading, first-generation foldables from other makers have had early screen trouble too, and fixes usually arrived quietly in later batches.
The fair point in Apple’s favour is that the teardown also shows careful work: a smarter hinge, easier battery swaps and a repair manual on day one. The fair worry is that a US$1,999 phone should not need such careful handling. Our reading: Apple will be judged less on whether a few screens failed, and more on how clearly it now explains what happened and who is covered.
Watch for an Apple support note or a repair programme, and for any change before the 30 October launches. Until then, the best protection is simple: keep your receipt close and the hinge clean.
